The new Scirocco is already one of Volkswagen’s best looking vehicles, but it was only a matter of time before tuning firms got to work trying to improve it. With a historical link to Scirocoo’s of the past, it was natural for OETTINGER to come up with a significant reworking of the new model.

Volkswagen confirms new roadster debut for 2009 Detroit Show

As previously reported, Volkswagen was preparing a concept roadster for a debut at this month's Los Angeles Auto Show. But it seems like many of the other large auto companies out there, the project has been delayed. Now the roadster has traded in the fair weather LA for fun-in-the-sun Detroit in January. Volkswagen likes to get the most out of its platforms (that's why the upper class Audi TT is on the same platform as the budget Skoda Octavia.) So it seems that the VW Group wants (...)

It's hard to have cool police cruiser in the U.S. We arrest so many people that we need full-size cars with full-size back seats. The big V8s may make the cars fast, but the big sedans always have a somewhat Grandmamobile look to them. In fact, the last cool cruiser belonged to Jake and Ellwood. That's why European cops are cooler. VIDEO: Seat Exeo Sport Tourer to debut in Geneva

Click above to watch the video after the jump

What do you do with an old model when you've already replaced it with a newer one? Well, most automakers would simply trash it and move on. Not Volkswagen though. Instead of discarding the previous Audi A4, the bean-counters at VW Group corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg simply passed it on to another division: SEAT. In this case, the Spanish subsidiary that was lacking a flagship model.
Called the Exeo, the sedan variant already took its curtain call (we wouldn't quite call it a debut) at last year's Paris Salon, but since the A4 came in both four-door and Avant wagon forms, SEAT is now preparing to relaunch the Exeo wagon in Geneva. Called the Exeo Sport Tourer, it's pretty much exactly like the Exeo sedan, only with an extended roof. Engine options - including a 198 horsepower turbo four and common-rail turbodiesels in 141 and 168 hp flavors - will carry over. SEAT hasn't released photos just yet, but has given us a video, which we've placed after the jump - just in case you've forgotten what a badge-engineered, last-generation Audi A4 Avant looked like.

Routan Bust? VW asks Chrysler to stop building minivans for February

Evidently, early consumer feedback suggests that Fahrvergnügen is not spelled "R-o-u-t-a-n." Volkswagen has reportedly asked Chrysler Canada to temporarily halt production for the month of February on its new ported-over minivan.
Initial Routan sales have been slow, with the Windsor Star reporting that around 29,000 units have been shipped to dealers, but only a few thousand have actually been sold. The production stoppage should help stem the supply overage somewhat, but all signs point to the Routan having a rough road ahead - and not just because of the increasingly dire economic climate. VW's Brooke Shields "Routan Boom" ad campaign appears to have drawn more quizzical looks and outright scorn than potential buyers, and critics are questioning how well the vehicle lines up with VW's brand image.
If nothing else, the Routan clearly has the finest interior of any model in the Chrysler minivan family and a quick spin by this author suggests that it's the best driving, too. Still, those positive aspects don't appear to be enough to guarantee homes for the 300 or so Routans leaving the plant each day.

What to do With 2500 of Your Old Cameras - Feature

Who: Harrod Blank, 46, Artist
What: Camera Van
Where: Douglas,Arizona
______________________________________________________________

How many cameras are on it?

More than 2500, inside and out. I made it into a darkroom in the back, and there’s a light-meter collection on the dashboard so when I’m driving and the light filters through the windshield, the needles are all moving. I have shutter buttons that control the cameras that work.

What was it before the transformation?

A ’72 Dodge one-ton van. I got a heavy-duty version because it’s carrying a lot of weight.

How much does it weigh?

I never weighed it. I know the door itself is 500 pounds.

You weighed the door?

I’m guessing. You can feel it when you open it.

Why?

I started doing art cars at age 16. My first was “Oh My God!” in 1979, which started out as a white 1965 VW Beetle that I never stopped decorating. I wanted to show people what it was I saw while driving it around. I couldn’t take a picture—they’d react to the camera. One night in ’93, I had a dream that I covered my car with cameras and drove around taking pictures.

2010 Volkswagen GTI - Second Drive

At the press launch of the 2010 GTI, Volkswagen provided an original 1976 car—the first year of the Golf GTI in Europe—for comparative test drives. The sheer pleasure of driving the museum car demonstrated what made that first hot hatch a huge success. It was also startling to witness just how far the GTI has come in six generations—more than 1,706,000 sold—with regard to its refinement, performance, and safety.

However, the difference between the fifth- and sixth-generation GTIs is slight. The new GTI—and the forthcoming Golf (née Rabbit, for the second time) on which it is based—uses the same underpinnings as last year’s model. The roof, brakes, and suspension are the same, though the rear anti-roll bar is stiffer. The styling is new, featuring narrower headlights and taillights that give the GTI an altogether lower and wider appearance. Your eyes deceive you. Dimensions of the Euro-spec model—the only version we drove—are nearly identical to those of the last GTI.

Likely for cost reasons, the turbo four-cylinder engine remains the same in U.S. GTIs, while European models get revised tuning and slight tweaks, including a new fuel pump and mass-airflow sensor, which yield 10 additional horsepower. Transmission choices—a six-speed manual and a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual—are carry-overs as well.

MTM releases full specs for VW Scirocco tuner kit

The Volkswagen Scirocco is proving to be popular with tuners, with famed German performance shop MTM also releasing its own hotted-up version of the svelte sports coupe. MTM's work on German cars has been well documented, especially some of its more outrageous creations such as the 390km/h twin-engined Bimoto Audi TT. The most powerful Scirocco model, the 2.0L turbo unit, only produces 200hp (147kW), and even a rumored high-performance ‘R’ variant is expected to reach about 270hp (201kW).

Rieger bodykit for the VW Scirocco

German tuner Rieger has unveiled a stunning new bodykit for Volkswagen's sporty Scirocco coupe, a car that is proving immensely popular with tuners from Europe. The bodykit adds some more aggression and flair to the already handsome Scirocco, and even includes Lamborghini-style doors for dramatic entrances. The front of the car bears some obvious visual clues to the Audi R8 supercar, with the front air intakes adorned with similar strakes to the German supercar. Each part of the bodykit is sold separately, and prices for each individual component vary between €119 and €620.

Report: Volkswagen considering sale of Polo in U.S.

The small-car surge in the U.S. was cut short in 2008 when once-high fuel prices dropped as suddenly as they'd risen, but the future of the market seems clear: prices will rise again, and small cars will be the best solution. To that end, Volkswagen now appears to be contemplating bringing the Polo to the U.S. to help meet the expected demand. VW's current smallest car in the U.S. is the Rabbit (Golf to the rest of the world), which sits around the middle of VW's global range. The smaller Polo could offer even smaller and more efficient engines, which could help bring a new premium entry to the small car market while at the same time helping VW meet next-generation CAFE standards. The report of VW's consideration of the Polo for American sale originates with a VW executive interviewed on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show by Automotive News Europe.

Volkswagen has taken the top two spots at this year’s Dakar Rally, which incidentally was hosted in South America due to terrorist threats in the event’s usual homeland of Northern Africa. This year also saw a diesel vehicle take victory in the automobile class for the first time in the event’s thirty year history. VW factory driver and off-road motorsport veteran, Mark Miller, also made history as the highest finishing American that has ever raced in the Dakar Rally. The rally was won by South African-German duo Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz.

Volkswagen R32 inventory down to a couple hundred

Volkswagen of America sold a total of 12,744 cars in January 2009, a 11.6 percent decline over January 2008 sales. One V-dub model reported a significant 90 percent drop in sales last month - the R32.

Volkswagen sold just 35 units of the R32 in January 2009 as compared to the 336 units it sold in January 2008. Volkswagen spokesman Jim Gill says that’s due to the inventory of the R32.

“There is no 2009 model of the R32,” Gill told Inside Line. “We adjusted the product mix. The number reflects what’s left in the inventory. There aren’t many of them left nationwide — just a couple hundred.”

Last week, it was reported that Volkswagen is working on a new 270-hp R-Series that’s due out early 2010.

Volkswagen Passat CC Eco Performance (Concept)

The Volkswagen Passat CC Performance Concept unveiled at the 2008 SEMA show in Las Vegas brings a sleek exterior treatment highlighted by black chrome exterior accents, grey pearl paint with custom front and rear bumper, side panels and machined aluminum spoiler. The black treatment continues inside with high-gloss piano black accents offset by matte black graphics. Customer black leather Recaro seats and matching floor mats are highlighted with white piping.

With three modes for optimum performance and economy, Volkswagen's Super CC Eco Performance Concept takes the Passat CC FSI to new levels, namely higher output and lower fuel consumption but also to subtle styling highs.

Good thing the VW Passat CC Eco is here to buck the trend, then. Actually, its full title is the Passat CC Eco Performance Concept, and it’s been unveiled at the SEMA show, which should give you some clue that it’s not a hair-shirt warrior.

The Performance CC sits on custom designed 10-spoke, 20-inch wheels and high performance 245/30 R20 Yokahama tires with an H&R street coil over sport suspension kit. With all this power to handle, Volkswagen has upgraded the brakes to provide extra power to stop. The Performance CC features 14-inch Brembo brakes with 4-piston Aluminum Alloy Brake Calipers and 355x32mm 2-Piece Floating Cross Drilled Discs with Billet Aluminum Hats.

The crew at Volkswagen's Design Centre in California took the 4-cylinder TSI engine and 2.0L TSI engine and upgraded the turbo, adding an APR stage 3 turbocharger system with three performance levels.
While maximum power of 232kW (311hp) and 424Nm of torque is available in 'Full Power' mode, the Passat CC-based concept car also has 'GT' and 'Eco' modes that output 188kW (252hp) and 165kW (222hp) respectively.

The Performance CC has some of the best looking wheels ever seen on any vehicle, wrapped with high performance 245/30 R30 Yokohama tires. The car also features an H&R coil over sport suspension for improved handling. With 14-inch, two-piece, floating, cross-drilled Brembo discs and four-piston aluminum alloy brake calipers, the Performance CC should stop as well as it goes.

The Performance CC was designed by the Volkswagen Design Center in California with assistance from APR, LLC (www.goapr.com), Recaro, H&R Suspension and Brembo North America.

Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk 6

Road test

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk VI

17 out of 20

£22,000

Driven March 2009

With the incoming Focus RS monopolising REM sleep for most of our hot hatch devotees, the Mk VI Golf GTI might have slipped unnoticed onto our streets this summer. But it won't for two reasons. The first is that it is very good. The other, that it's been styled in the way that an RS aficionado would approve of. That he might have done himself, in fact, through mail order catalogues and Superglue.

Volkswagen has taken the truly excellent Mk V GTI and tweaked it in various vital respects. The engine is slightly lighter, but provides more power with better economy. It now has a limited slip diff to better harness that extra power, and an adaptive chassis that does comfy, not so comfy, and sporty at the touch of a button. The exhaust note is also astonishing and surely unprecedented in a 2.0-litre German hatchback.

So far so good. Positive progress. But the new GTI has also been restyled in a fashion that seems intended to deprive the aftermarket modders of much in the way of Sunday afternoon fun. New grille, headlights and fog lights at the front, new side skirts and wider, symmetrical exhausts at the rear. The wheels have also had their inserts painted black. None of this looks bad per se, but it's all a teeny bit like a first date in Nandos. Mind you, the Focus RS driver is in the Chicken Cottage.

2010 Volkswagen GTI Revealed - Car News

VW wants to hype the smallish Polo at the Geneva auto show this March, but we don't really care. The significant news for us is the next-generation GTI, of which production-version pictures have now been leaked courtesy of worldcarfans.com.

The GTI was previewed with a concept car at the 2008 Paris auto show, and we are pleased to report that VW executives were truthful when they told us the concept was 99-percent true to the series production model. The only things that may differ from the Paris concept are minor interior trim details.

The new GTI comes with the current model's 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four, but it is upgraded to 210 hp from 200. That's not class-leading, but smooth power delivery in a well-tuned package has made the GTI one of our favorites for years. It even made its third consecutive appearance on our 10Best list in 2009, despite the imminent model changeover.

It’s no secret that we love the Volkswagen GTI—it's a three-time reigning recipient of a 10Best Cars award, after all. But even the 210 hp of the upcoming sixth-generation 2010 replacement model leave the GTI at a distinct power disadvantage in its class.

In the recent past, VW’s answer for power junkies has been the R32—a GTI with a 3.2-liter V-6 shoehorned into its engine compartment. Heavier than the GTI and equipped with all-wheel drive, the R32 failed to deliver significant performance improvements despite its 250-hp rating. We liked it, but were disappointed by the marginal performance benefits over the base GTI.

Six Becomes Four—Plus a Turbo

Meet the new R-series Golf. It will feature basically the same direct-injection 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that you find in the GTI, tuned to an impressive 270 hp. Power will be transmitted to all wheels. Zero-to-60 times should be in the low- to mid-fives, and while the regular GTI tops out at a drag-limited 149 mph, the new R version will hit its governor at 155, with a theoretical top speed 10 mph or so higher.
