2012 Volkswagen Up

For American car buyers, “small” and “premium” are no longer mutually exclusive terms. Vehicles such as the Mini Cooper and Smart Fortwo have sold well enough to prove that small cars don’t necessarily have to be cheap. Volkswagen’s upcoming small car, the Up, will attempt to follow in the Mini’s tire tracks, but it will start at about $10,000. What’s odd is that even though VW has designed the Up with the idea of offering it in the U.S. market, the company is still not completely committed to bringing it here out of fear that it may prove too small for American tastes.

When VW unveiled the Up as a concept car at the 2007 Frankfurt auto show, it was a rear-engine, rear-wheel-driver in the spirit of the original Beetle. We loved the idea, not only because of its flashback layout—we also liked the styling, and its small size and light weight promised entertaining handling.

2009 Volkswagen CC gets IIHS’s Top Safety Pick award

Volkswagen of America announced today that the 2009 Volkswagen CC received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award for 2009. To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute’s front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control, which is standard on the CC.

“The TOP SAFETY PICK award from the IIHS is a tremendous honor for our CC,” said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We are thrilled when organizations like the IIHS recognize the hard work of our engineers who are dedicated to the safety of our customers. This award further validates Volkswagen’s Prevent and Preserve Safety System approach to vehicle safety.”

The CC, like all 2009 Volkswagen models, features four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), anti-slip regulation (ASR), brake assist and electronic differential locking (EDL).

The 2009 Volkswagen CC carries a base price-tag of $27,100 and offers an EPA certified fuel economy of 21/31 mpg (city/highway).

Volkswagen to implement significant weight-saving technologies by 2012

According to a report by AutoCar, Volkswagen, Opel, Daimler, Volvo and Renault are working on reducing weight of their vehicles. In a joint project called SuperlightCar project, Volkswagen has reportedly built a Golf with a bodyshell that is 30 percent lighter than the standard five-door model.

The body is made mostly of steel but also uses magnesium, aluminum and plastics. A total of three concepts were developed - one was made purely of steel, one with mixed materials and one with more expensive mixed materials. Weight of the Mk5 Golf was reduced by a total of 41 percent.

The final shell is said to be a combination of all three. Volkswagen will be implementing the weight-saving technologies to its production cars by 2012.

Volkswagen To Offer Pickup In 2010

Possible Volkswagen Pickup Styling

Possible Volkswagen Pickup Styling

Further solidifying their hold as Europe’s largest automaker, Volkswagen is expanding their lineup to include a mid-size pickup in 2010.  If pre-production photos are any indication the new vehicle will adopt a  Ridgeline-like profile.  The pickup will be named the “Amarok,” and therefore also continue VW’s recent use of hard-to-pronounce, nonsensical model names.

The name is a derivative of the word “wolf” in the Inuit language, but may as well mean, “unsuccessful, Frankenstein truck” to those in the United States.  Nevertheless, the truck will be built in VW’s manufacturing plant in Pacheco Argentina and will initially go on sale in South America and Europe, followed by Australia and Africa, before a possible importation to North America.  Subsequent lackluster sales and discontinuation here in the states are sure to follow.

VW Robust Concept

VW Robust Concept

Despite skepticism as to it’s success in America, it will be another major step in VW’s market share consolidation in contrast to GM’s decline on the world stage.  Both the single and double cab versions will utilize a variant of VW’s highly acclaimed common rail turbo diesel injection (TDI) and purportedly produce the best fuel economy and emissions in its class.

Volkswagen Concept BlueSport

While the 2009 Detroit auto show was arguably the most miserable in living memory, it did have a few bright moments. Among the most notable was a delightful little mid-engined barchetta concept from Volkswagen – the Concept BlueSport Roadster. The only thing more delightful than recently driving it up and down a mountain pass on the German-Austrian border would be a decision by VW to put the diesel two-seater into production.

Such a green light might not be far away. Volkswagen bosses always intended the concept to be feasible pending a positive public reaction, which it received at Detroit and elsewhere. Volkswagen  Group policy is currently to invest strongly in new product. Rivals who are suffering more than the German automaker in the recession are cutting back on their new-car pipelines.

VW’s Eco-Friendly BlueSport Roadster Not Dead After All?

bluesport-newest

The Wolfsburg juggernaut Volkswagen has decided to produce of one of their most well-received concepts in many years, the BlueSport roadster, which our colleagues in the automotive press corps like to consider the spiritual successor to the VW-Porsche 914. They’ve given the little bugger an internal development code, which is big news because it was originally intended to be a one-off concept, not a pre-production concept. Plus, with its small turbo-diesel engine, it’s theoretically good for 42 MPG and complies with California’s strict emissions standards. Cool! Read on for more details …

bluesport-2

Here’s the goods: the expected price on the BlueSport will be around $30,000, which isn’t too bad. For that you’ll get a 180 HP, 260 ft-lbs of torque, 2L inline diesel four. Plus around 2600 lbs of curb weight. Not bad - that’s a MX-5 beating specification for just a bit more than a normal MX-5. Plus it will blow it out of the water in fuel economy. Quite an interesting little car. We hope VW produces it, as just the idea of a mid-engined diesel sportscar makes our naughty bits tingle with excitement.

Volkswagen BlueSport ready for production, estimated cost: $30k. Will it happen?

Volkswagen Bluesport Concept -

After getting an exclusive first drive of the Volkswagen BlueSport roadster, the lucky scribes from AutoWeek write of the machine as if it's headed for production. This is contrary to earlier reports coming from an unnamed VW insider which indicated that the program had been placed on hold due to the dire state of the global economy.
We hope AW's right about the BlueSport's production possibilities, especially after reading about how close to production-ready the roadster appears to be. If the German automaker does find a way to build the BlueSport, it will reportedly show up in in the States in 2013 starting for somewhere around $30,000, depending on the powerplant that VW decides to place behind the two occupants.
The turbocharged, direct-injected diesel mill currently in the concept, which VW says delivers nearly 42 miles per gallon in everyday driving, could very well be joined by at least one of VW's gasoline-burning units - possibly the 265-horsepower 2.0-liter installed in the Audi S3 and Volkswagen's own Scirocco R and Golf R. As always, we'll keep our eyes and ears open for more details as they become available.

VW takes issue with Magna/Opel tie-up

You knew that something like this was coming sooner or later: at least one of Magna's clients have found the supplier's majority stake in Opel to be a conflict of interest. As it turns out, Volkswagen was the first automaker to cry foul.
Magna is a major supplier for VW and its brands, while Opel is a big-time competitor. Spokesman Michael Brendel says the company going to "monitor this development very closely." We're guessing that translates roughly to "'if Opel receives any preferential treatment over VW whatsoever, heads will roll."
Should all go according to plan, Magna and its partner Sberbank will have a combined 55% stake in the new Opel. GM will retain a 35% stake, while Opel's 25,000 employees will receive the remaining 10% in the company. The German government provided 1.5 billion euro to keep Opel from entering GM bankruptcy proceedings, making the deal with Magna possible.
Magna expects Opel to once again become profitable within four years, and the Canada-based supplier intends to bring Opels to Canada by the end of the year. Opel vehicles will not be making their way to the U.S. under the terms of the agreement, however.
Magna co-CEO Siegfried Wolf expects the Opel deal to be signed off on in the next five weeks.

VW BlueSport Roadster ready for production, pricing to start around $30k

Last we heard anything about the Volkswagen BlueSport Roadster’s production plans, it was reported that the big bosses at V-dub are reconsidering the model due to the global economic crisis as they calculate “the viability of the niche car.”

When it was unveiled at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January, insiders at Volkswagen told reporters that the model would come to the market in 2012.

Now, according to AutoWeek, Volkswagen’s BlueSport Roadster is ready to make the leap from concept to production. Due to the mid-engine platform, Volkswagen says that the production BlueSport could carry a starting price-tag of about $30,000 when it hits showrooms.

By now you’re probably very excited to see this concept become a reality - but there is some more good news to keep you entertained.

Right now there is only one BlueSport Roadster in existence and it carries a 180-hp 2.0 TDI 4-cylinder common-rail diesel. Mated to a 6-speed DSG, the BlueSport Roadster averages a whopping 55 mpg.

According to Mario Fabiano, the BlueSport’s project leader, also under consideration is the 265-hp 2.0L turbocharged gasoline direct-injection that powers the Scirocco R.

2010 Volkswagen Amarok: V-dub pickup coming in 2010

Volkswagen announced today that the production version of its pickup concept unveiled last year will be launched under the ‘Amarok’ name when it arrives in Europe in 2010.

Amarok means wolf in Inuit language. Eskimo people, who live in northern Canada and Greenland, regard the wolf as king of the wilderness and a figure of robustness, endurance and superiority. It also means ‘he loves stones’ in some languages spoken in South America.

“This name fits the characteristics of our pickup perfectly, which will set new standards in its class,” says Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “We took great care selecting this name, which can be used globally and is meant to invoke positive associations in all relevant international markets. The Amarok is a powerful and robust vehicle with great stamina - just like the wolf.”

Volkswagen said that the Amarok will be launched as a double-cab pickup with four-wheel-drive. A single-cab version will introduced later. Power will come from a line Volkswagen’s next-generation common rail turbo diesel engines

The 2010 Volkswagen Amarok will be introduced first in South America in early 2010, followed by Central America in Spring 2010, then Russia and Europe in the summer, as well as Africa and Australia.

2009 Volkswagen Polo - First Drive Review

If you still identify Volkswagen with the uncomplicated—and mechanically simple—original Beetle, it’s time to update your thinking. Times have changed, and the focus at VW is now on technology and modern design. The recently launched Golf VI provided a strong hint of where VW is headed with its high-volume cars, but it’s this new Polo that really lights the way. See, the Golf VI is burdened with many carryover parts from the Golf V, a.k.a. Rabbit, whereas the Polo is the first all-new car from the latest leadership group helming the S.S. Vee Dub. "What you see here is VW design for the coming ten years," the company told us at the car’s launch Sardinia. "This car we designed from scratch. A simple, crisp design leading to the future—which will be a lot different from the present."

Compared to the dull-looking outgoing model, the new Polo is a breath of fresh air. The lower and wider body defines simplicity. Details such as the small horizontal grille strip, the silver wing in the headlights, and the L-shaped rear lighting will resurface on other new VW models. The new look, we say, can't migrate too soon to the Jetta and Passat. While the three- and five-door hatchback versions of the Polo won't come to the U.S., we hear that a four-door sedan, which would be produced in Mexico, is considered a strong candidate for American sales.

As Usual, Europeans Have Many Engine Choices

On the Continent, the Polo is offered with three naturally aspirated gasoline engines: two 1.2-liter three-cylinder units producing 60 hp and 70 hp, and a 1.4-liter four producing 85 hp. Three variations of 1.6-liter turbo-diesel producing 75, 90, or 105 hp also are available. A 105-hp, 1.2-liter, turbocharged TSI four will hit the market soon, and a Polo GTI with 170–180 hp from a 1.4-liter TSI—similar in style to the Wörthersee concept car—is a done deal, too.

Volkswagen may be late to the gate with hybrids and electric cars, but its recent partnership with Chinese automaker and lithium ion battery producer BYD shows that the German car company is a serious contender in the race to supply the masses with an electric car.

Volkswagen has already signed letters of intent with Sanyo and Toshiba as suppliers for electric batteries, and the company is currently exploring an arrangement with BYD to supply VW with lithium ion batteries for its upcoming plug-in and all electric vehicles, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

BYD is one of the largest manufacturers of lithium ion batteries. High demand and cost has made these batteries one of the road blocks to building affordable plug-in and electric vehicles.

However, the battery-maker-turned-car-manufacturer has been able to make stable and durable lithium ion batteries at half the cost of batteries produced in the west and Japan due to its safer, most cost-effective iron-phosphate-based lithium-ion technology

Upcoming Volkswagen Models, Lineup to get Less German - Car News

With Chrysler sales dropping off a cliff, VW hopes to reposition itself as a quasi-American brand and take over the Pentastar’s place in the market. Therefore, production of the “new mid-size sedan”—VW’s Toyota Camry fighter—in its new, $1 billion plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, can’t happen soon enough.

The new mid-size sedan due in 2011 will be larger but less expensive than the current Passat and will emphasize size and value over autobahn breeding. A VW executive in Wolfsburg told us: “U.S. customers look at size and engine displacement. They won’t pay an extra dollar for a Passat over a Camry just because of its finesse and attention to detail.” It is this “size matters” thinking that has the diminutive VW Up in peril. The second vehicle to be produced in Chattanooga—beginning in mid-2011—will be a new medium-size crossover to compete with the Toyota Highlander.

Volkswagen plans mini-MPV version of the Polo, ‘more macho’ Beetle on the way

A Volkswagen’s board member confirmed that the German automaker is working on a mini-MPV version of the 2010 Polo along with a “more macho” successor to the Beetle. Han Dieter Potsch said that a “mini-MPV is in an area we have under active consideration. In terms of downsizing, people will not stick to one type of small car or another.”

Sources told AutoCar that many brands struggle with mini-MPVs but when they are planned and executed properly, “they can be complementary.”

Potsch said that Volkswagen has been stepping up R&D efforts to make sure it is not in a troublesome position when the market starts to recover.

As for the “macho Beetle,” sources told AutoCar that the car will be a lot less feminine than before and will be more masculine so guys are interested in buying it

VW Scirocco R Unveiled with 265 HP...Arg!

vw_scirocco_r.jpg
This fall VW is going to release a more powerful Scirocco, dubbed the Scirocco R.

The more powerful Scirocco R gets the engine from the Audi S3, which thanks to a bigger turbo, uprated pistons, and high-pressure injectors puts out 265 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual or the DSG. Unfortunately the power is still put to the ground only via the front wheels. The ride has also been lowered and there are larger brakes.

The R version of the Scirocco is distinguishable by a new body kit, spoiler, sports seats and R badges.

Too bad US drivers can only drool over this car, since VW has no plans to bring either version of the Scirocco to the US.

Acura four-door-coupe coming to the U.S. in 2010

According to Auto Motor und Sport, Honda is working on a 4-door-coupe that will fit in the European market as a top level Accord - otherwise known to us as the Acura TSX on the stateside. Sources say that the car will most likely be a front-wheel-drive vehicle that carries over the 200-hp 4-cylinder 2.4L. A top-level Type-S versions is also being considered and will use a turbocharged 2.3L 4-cylinder making 260-hp with a DSG transmission and Honda’s SH-AWD system.

Separately, Japan’s Holiday Auto magazine reports that the 4-door Honda coupe is not to far off from production and to look out for the car during 2010. On the stateside, the car will sit between the TL and TSX in terms of size.

Holiday Auto says that the car will get similar powertrain options as the Acura ZDX, meaning we can also see Honda’s 280-hp 3.2L V6.

Styling wise, the Honda 4-door-coupe will be influenced by the ZDX.

The 3.0 TFSI V6 was supercharged to pump out a total of 408-hp with a peak torque of 369 lb-ft. The engine is mated to a quattro all-wheel-drive system and a 7-speed S-tronic transmission. The Audi Q5 Custom Concept goes from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

Our spy photographers have caught Volkswagen’s next generation 2012 Passat undergoing testing on Germany’s famous Nürburgring.

While the mule wears the current Passat body, we can see slight modifications in the form of wider wheel wells and lengthened B-pillars. This clearly indicates that the next generation Passat will be longer and wider than today’s model.

In terms of exterior design, the new Passat is expected to ditch the current model’s bland styling for a more aggressive appearance which is both luxurious and dynamic.

2010 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen

Walter de'Silva, Volkswagen's chief designer, is wasting no time deploying his new styling language across the VW lineup. After the debut of the Golf VI, VW needed to pull the Golf Variant—known in the U.S. as the Jetta SportWagen—forward to match the base model's new looks. VW is now launching the new Golf Variant in Europe, and its new nose (if not its powertrain lineup) will transfer to the U.S. later this year.

The Jetta Plays Golf

The new Golf Variant, aka Jetta SportWagen, is fitted with the front end of the Golf VI. This successful operation replaces the current headlights and the vertical, glitzy chrome grill with a much cleaner headlight-grille arrangement that emphasizes horizontal lines. And the interior is 100-percent Golf VI, fitted with premium materials and comfortably ahead of its class. But neither the side view nor the rear is changed significantly. The taillights are darker, the rear bumper is now body-colored, and the exhaust pipe is made visible in TDI and TSI trim—that's it.

Volkswagen Touareg Lux Limited sports J. Crew colors

The VW Touareg Lux Limited Edition is a ‘ute that’s been on a shopping spree to J. Crew and High Street, or at least a mainstream, aftermarket shop. Available on either the gasoline- or diesel-engined SUVs – and only in America – the Lux Limited gets side skirts and slightly tweaked front and rear aprons to differentiate it from the run-o-the-mill Touareg. The wheel selection is called Ayer’s Rock (not “Uluru”?) and only available in the 20-inch variety.

VW took the color wheel out one night and got it drunk. Exterior hues for the Lux Limited are Biscay Blue, Campanella White, Galapagos Gray, and Black Magic Pearl Effect. The interior cricket leather is done up in one of two duo-tone color choices with complementary accents – like Latte Macchiato and St. Tropez white with poplar grain decor. And if anyone can tell us what “Engine Spin dark” decor looks like, we are all… eyes.

VW Scirocco R20T-1VW Scirocco R20T-2Note that this VW Scirocco R20T lacks a roll cage, likely relegating its track duties to the parade type. Otherwise, the R20T visual treatment features a more aggressive front end with larger intakes, a new rear spoiler, and an exhaust tip protruding from each end of the rear bumper. The Audi S3-derived, turbo 2.0L under hood should generate somewhere between 270 hp and 300 hp.
Along with this Scirocco, we also expect VW to unveil the Golf R20 at the 24 hour race. Stay tuned, the festivities begin May 21.

Toyota, Honda praise Obama’s new proposal on fuel-economy regulations

Toyota and Honda are both praising President Barack Obama’s proposal for new fuel-economy regulations. Of course, we’re guessing that’s because they are at an advantage compared to their American rivals. Toyota gave Obama high praise for promoting technology to boost fuel-economy and reduced emissions.

“Toyota will speed up in pursuing various ecological technologies, including hybrid technology, to deliver better mileage in vehicles,” the maker of the 50 mpg 2010 Toyota Prius said in a statement.

Honda expressed a similar praise saying “We will embrace it.” The no.2 Japanese automaker rivals Toyota’s 2010 Prius with the new Honda Insight hybrid, which gets an EPA rated fuel-economy of 40/43 mpg (city/highway).

Obama announced a new proposal on Tuesday calling for an average fuel-economy 35.5 mpg by 2016.

2009 Volkswagen Routan SE - Short Take Road Test

Volkswagen bills the Routan as a “stylish alternative to the minivan,” and we have it from no less an authority than actress Brooke Shields, who in Routan ads claims that its German engineering drives women to motherhood (to qualify for ownership).

The TV spots starring Ms. Shields, herself a mom, were clearly zunge in der wange (German for tongue in cheek), but we confess that this minivan alternative looks a lot like a real minivan (German for minivan) to us. If it weren’t for the VW fascia and big VW logo (six inches in diameter), you might even mistake it for, say, a Dodge Grand Caravan. Which, of course, it is. Mostly.

Chrysler builds Routans for VW at its plant in Windsor, Ontario. Canada. Not in Germany. And the hardware that makes it a Routan comes from Chrysler suppliers.

2010 Volkswagen Golf Estate, the fourth-variant of the Golf family

Volkswagen announced today that it is adding a fourth body variant to the Golf’s 2-door, 4-door and Golf Plus lineup. Starting this Friday, Volkswagen will begin taking orders for the new 2010 Golf Estate with prices starting at €18,500 ($25,698 USD).

The new 2010 Volkswagen Golf Estate will be available with a selection of gasoline and diesel engines. Diesel output ranges from 105-hp to 140-hp while gasoline engines deliver outputs ranging from 122-hp to 160-hp. A total of six engine choices will be available and all six meet the new Euro-5 emissions standard.

Buyers of the 2010 Volkswagen Golf Estate will be able to pick from three trim-levels including Trendline, Comfortline and Highline.

The New Golf Estate - Initial Facts

- Advance sales of the new compact class estate car begin on Friday.
- New Golf Estate launches at prices starting at € 18,500, including climate control and daytime running lights*
- Technology and features on par with sixth Golf generation.
- Front end of Golf Estate now follows new Volkswagen “Design DNA.”

Wolfsburg, 21 May 2009 - Volkswagen will begin accepting advance orders for the new Golf Estate this Friday. In the sixth generation of the world bestseller, after the 2-door and 4-door Golfs and the latest Golf Plus, this is the fourth body version to be launched. The estate is one of the most successful models on the market, particularly in the company car market. The extensive redesign of this Estate should ensure that the all-around talent further extends its position as a business estate car and as a first car for families as well. The base price of the new Golf Estate in Germany, including ESP, six airbags, daytime running lights, roof railing, power windows all around, upshift indicator, power and heated outside mirrors, 1/3 to 2/3 split folding rear bench seat and seatback, central locking with RF remote control, climate control and 1,495 litres of cargo capacity is € 18,500.

The front end of the Golf Estate was completely redesigned. Its visual appearance follows today’s Volkswagen “Design DNA”. From now its appearance is defined by clear horizontal lines and bold headlight styling. The car’s engine lineup was adopted directly from the Golf 2-door and 4-door models. In the interior, the high-end instruments of the current Golf set the tone. In Europe, first units of the new Golf will be delivered in September.

Features and engines

At its market launch - in parallel to advance sales that are now starting - the successful Estate (more than 95,000 new vehicle registrations in 2008) will be offered in the three equipment versions Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The latter replaces the previous Sportline version as the top equipment line. Engines available for selection when advance sales begin are a TSI (boosted gasoline direct-injection engine) with 90 kW / 122 PS and two very quiet common rail turbo-diesels (77 kW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS). Other engines will follow in stages: two Multipoint engines (59 kW / 80 PS and 75 kW / 102 PS) and another TSI gasoline engine (118 kW / 160 PS). All six engines fulfil the new Euro-5 emissions standard.

Exterior details of the new Golf Estate

In front, the new Golf Estate can be recognized by its new bumper, radiator grille and engine hood styling and its modified fenders and headlights, which were all adapted 1:1 from the estate’s 2-door and 4-door counterparts. In contrast to the previous model, the front-end design is no longer defined by a chrome radiator grille, rather by a black, horizontally layout of the grille and front bumper painted in car colour. In the lower area, the Estate has an additional large air inlet too. Starting with the mid-level equipment version (Comfortline), chrome inserts are integrated in the radiator grille and the lower air inlet. In the top Highline version, this also applies to the frames for the front fog lights with new static turning light function that are a standard feature here.

At the rear, the independent design of the previous model has been upgraded in the new generation by modified, more elegant taillights and bumpers fully painted in car colour in the lower area. From now on, TDI and TSI versions can also be recognized by their tailpipes, which are no longer covered by the bumper. In addition, Volkswagen developed a new wheel lineup for the new Golf Estate.

Interior details of the new Golf Estate

At the time of its presentation last fall, the sixth generation Golf received excellent marks, especially for its high-end quality. In the interior, it was especially in the styling of the gauges that the Golf crossed boundaries to the next higher class and still does. The same gauges and instruments, including a standard multifunctional display and upshift indicator, are now being used in the new Golf Estate too. Also adopted from the Golf was the new generation of three-spoke steering wheels, which celebrated their debut in the Passat CC in 2008.

In this context, controls for the new Golf climate control system were integrated in the Golf Estate as well. Volkswagen also adapted its line of different seat covers (Trendline: “Roxy”; Comfortline: “Scout”; Highline: Alcantara/fabric “Merlin”) to the entire model series. The same applies to features ranging from the radio and navigation systems up to the interfaces for MP3 players and Bluetooth mobile telephones. Two driver assistance systems are also available as options for the first time in the Golf Estate: “ParkAssist” (automatic parking assistant) and “Rear Assist” (rearview camera). Another feature being offered is the panorama sunroof that is popular among many Golf Estate buyers.

Euro-5 engines of the new Golf Estate in detail

Volkswagen is launching the new Golf Estate on the market with four gasoline and two diesel engine options; they all meet the limits of the new Euro-5 standard. The entry level continues to be marked by an 80-PS gasoline engine, followed by a 102-PS version. The two most powerful gasoline engines (TSI with 122 PS and 160 PS) and the two turbo-diesels (TDI with 105 PS and 140 PS) may be ordered with an optional automatic DSG dual clutch transmission.

Entirely new to the Golf Estate’s engine lineup is the 105 PS common rail TDI. Like the larger 2.0-liter TDI, the 1.6-liter four cylinder is also characterized by noticeably comfortable noise levels, low emissions (119 g/km CO2) and an extremely low average fuel consumption (4.5 litres per hundred kilometres). Compared to the previous model of the same power, fuel consumption was reduced by 0.7 litre.

The 2.0 TDI was adopted from the previous generation of the Golf Estate; it also has a highly advanced common rail direct injection system. The 140 PS strong and 210 km/h fast Golf Estate 2.0 TDI consumes 5.0 litre (132 g/km CO2), which is impressively low considering its power. The TDI engines may be ordered together with any of the three equipment versions.

As already noted, the gasoline engines of the Golf Estate have power levels of 80 PS (MPI), 102 PS (MPI), 122 PS (TSI) and 160 PS (TSI). The base engine with 80 PS is available with the Trendline equipment line; the 102-PS version may be ordered as a Golf Estate Trendline or Golf Estate Comfortline. The TSI engines can each be ordered together with the Comfortline or Highline equipment versions.

Just how efficiently the current gasoline engines from Volkswagen perform is well-illustrated by the TSI. Its 6.3 litre (122 PS) and 6.4 litre (160 PS) fuel consumption values place their average fuel consumption on par with the already economical base engine with 80 PS. When shifted by a DSG transmission, fuel consumption is even reduced to 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres (139 g/km CO2) on the 122-PS TSI and 6.1 litres (143 g/km CO2) on the 160-PS version. With this engine lineup, the new Golf Estate is one of the most economical and cleanest estate cars in Europe.

Next Gen VW Touran MPV Mule – spied pics

The next Volkswagen Touran has been spied testing on the streets with a trailer in tow. Though the mule uses the current Touran facelift for its body, underneath there lies the next-generation model. The Touran will take on the brand's new face which can already be seen on the Scirocco, the Golf VI and the new Polo. VW's versatile vehicle has been in the market since 2003 and it received a facelift in 2007.
Next Gen VW Touran MPV Mule-1Next Gen VW Touran MPV Mule-2Speculation is that because the current car, which is based on the expensive to build Golf V platform, VW is moving the next one's release date up in order to take advantage of the cheaper Golf VI platform.
Engines expected include the 1.4-litre TSI and the 1.6-litre. Turbo diesels are also popular in this segment so the 1.9 TDI as well as the 2.0 TDI will form the lineup. Mated to these engines are two gearboxes, the familiar 6-speed manual and the new 7-speed DSG.
Gadgets on the menu would be things like the self-park function, touch screen satellite navigation and lane assist.
It would not be a surprise to see the Touran at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R - Car News

This weekend’s running of the 24-hour endurance race at the legendary Nürburgring is not just playing host to racing dreams, but also to the launch of the Volkswagen Scirocco R. The third and latest generation of the VW Scirocco is not for the U.S., but it's still fun to keep tabs on, especially since the R gives us a glimpse of the Golf R that should arrive on our shores later this year.

Not the Race Car, but It’s Close

Five Sciroccos will race at the Ring under the Scirocco GT24 moniker; three of them are powered by a 315-hp TSI engine, while the other two use a 300-hp version fueled by compressed natural gas. The street Scirocco R that Europeans will be able to buy is only slightly less powerful than the ‘Rocco racers: Using a high-powered version of the 2.0-liter turbo four that’s ubiquitous across the VW Group’s lineup, it makes 265 hp at 6000 rpm and a whopping 258 lb-ft of torque at 2500–5000 rpm. In this spec, it is most closely related to the unit offered in the Euro-only Audi S3. Fuel economy is rated at a modest 28 mpg in the European cycle (29 with the six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission). The manual-equipped Scirocco reaches 62 mph in a claimed 6.5 seconds (6.4 with DSG). Top speed is governed at 155 mph.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg - Spied

The Volkswagen Touareg and its Porsche Cayenne sibling serve as the perfect example for the synergies between VW and Porsche. Porsche developed both SUVs, while VW builds them at its Bratislava, Slovenia, plant. Porsche fits V-8 engines into the SUVs’ bodies in its Leipzig, Germany, facility, while the V-6 engines of the entry Cayennes are fitted at VW’s plant in Slovakia. The partnership has worked well: the Cayenne has served Porsche's existing customer base while bringing new buyers to the brand, and the Touareg bolstered VW's claim that it is a premium carmaker more convincingly than the ill-fated Phaeton.

To the latter point, the Touareg has always impressed us with its mountain-goat-like off-road capability and superbly finished interior. Where it falls short of the competition, however, is in seating capacity—unlike some others in its class, it is just a five-seater—and its heft. It is simply too heavy, with curb weights well into the 5000-pound range.

With the next-generation Touareg, spied here, VW aims to address both shortcomings. A VW source hints at available third-row seating, but we advise you not to sell your Suburban yet, since, as in most SUVs of this type, it will be mostly symbolic in nature.

2009 Volkswagen Scirocco R unveiled with 265-hp

Last month, Volkswagen announced that it will be returning to the 24-Hour Race at the Nurburgring with the 300-hp Scirocco GT24-CNG. Today, the German automaker announced something we’ve all been waiting for a very long time. At the 24-Hour Race at the Nurburgring, Volkswagen will hold the world-premiere of the new 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco R.

Power comes from a 2.0 TSI 4-cylinder engine making 265-hp with a maximum torque of 258 lb-ft.

Design of the 2009 Scirocco R is based on the Scirocco GT24, which made its Nurburgring debut last year. Pricing and availability details will be announced at a later date; however, don’t expect it to come to the United States.

2009 Volkswagen Scirocco R:

Press Release:

The new Scirocco R - From the race track to the road
Sports car has international debut at the Nürburgring

Wolfsburg / Nürburg, 20 May 2009 - There could not be a better time or place for a world premiere: parallel to the start of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, Volkswagen is presenting the new Scirocco R for the first time anywhere. A sports car without compromise and a race track that demands everything of the driver will be meeting together this weekend.

Approximately one year after the market launch of the third Scirocco generation, Volkswagen is presenting the most powerful series built Scirocco ever made at the Nürburgring. Its charged four-cylinder 2.0 l TSI is impressive with an output of 195 kW / 265 PS and 350 Newton metres of torque - the dynamic effect is just as striking as the running gear which provides optimal traction characteristics thanks to, amongst other things, the new front axle differential lock XDS.

The design of the Scirocco R is largely based on the Scirocco GT24, which was designed for motor sports: there are large air intake openings in the front bumper which the engineers used to achieve optimal cooling for the engine and the brakes, and an integrated front spoiler as well as the bi-xenon headlights. At the rear end, the roof edge spoiler, which is much larger than on the standard model, a striking shining black diffuser and the chrome tailpipes of the dual exhaust system dominate the design. The side view of the vehicle is characterised by the powerful sill panels as well as the specially-designed 18″ alloy wheels “Talladega”.

Volkswagen will demonstrate the potential of the new Scirocco R during the 24- hour race with this racing version. With a total of five Sciroccos, driver teams including Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Volkswagen board of management for technical development, the rally world champion Carlos Sainz as well as this year’s Dakar winner Giniel de Villiers, will be at the start line.

Note: Comprehensive information on the 24-hour race can be found at www.volkswagen-motorsport.info.
